Imports

The Pigmeat, Eggs and Poultry Section (PEP) issues import licences quarterly under several preferential import quota schemes for particular products. You must comply with certain qualifying conditions before you are able to apply. These import licences will allow you to benefit from either reduced or nil import duties, depending on the individual scheme.

You do not need a licence from us to import these commodities into the EC. However, you must contact the Department of Animal and Public Health at DEFRA tel no 0207 9046498 to establish if all health requirements have been met and that the goods are allowed into the United Kingdom.

Exports

Some pigmeat, egg or poultry products when exported to certain destinations attract an export refund and claims for this are dealt with by PEP section. If you wish to claim an export refund you must have an Advance Fixing Certificate (AFC) unless your export is below a certain amount in weight. The PEP section also deals with the applications for AFCs.

Animal and public health requirements

There is information available on Defra's web site about the animal and public health import and export requirements for all animal products. Not meeting the animal health requirements can result in your product being seized and re-exported or destroyed at your own expense.
