The Sugar section issues licences for the import and export of sugar between The European Community (EC) and Non-EC countries. There are three main types of licence that we issue:

  • Standard Import Licences are required for all imports of sugar of more than 2000 kg into the EC. These sugars may attract an import levy at the point of arrival into the EC.
  • Quota Import Licences are issued for certain sugars that are being imported with a reduced import levy from specific countries that have quota agreements with the EC.
  • Export Licences which are required for all sugar exports of more than 2000 kg from the EC to Non-EC countries.

In addition we also administer an export refund scheme for certain sugars that are being exported from the UK to Non-EC countries. Claims for export refund would be assessed by the Sugar Section who can provide further information.
