BCMS


The British Cattle Movement Service (BCMS) is part of the Rural Payments Agency (RPA). RPA is an Executive Agency of the Department for the Environment Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).

The service is based in Workington, Cumbria and was established to manage the Cattle Tracing System (CTS). BCMS became fully operational on 28 September 1998 and merged with RPA on 1 April 2003.

BCMS is the specialised cattle tracing organisation for Great Britain. Its functions are to:

  • maintain a register of births, deaths and imports of cattle to be used for animal health and subsidy control purposes;
  • issue cattle passports;
  • record where individual cattle are;
  • operate a dedicated Helpline and provide online facilities for delivering its services.

24 hours a day - 7 days a week, and can be used to register cattle births, deaths and movements (as long as the animal has a UK numeric eartag).
