Implementation of electronic identification (EID) from 31 December 2009 will replace the current double tagging rules for sheep which have been in force since 1 January 2008.
Defra, through the RPA, must by law approve official UK tags. If tags are not on our approved list they cannot be offered for sale as official tags. However, we are not required to ‘approve’ readers, so there is no such thing as an ‘official, Defra-approved’ reader.
All the readers in the following list have obtained EU Joint Research Centre certification, so meet at least the basic requirements for readers set out in the Technical Guidelines for Council regulation No. 21/2004 of 17/12/2003 Part 2.
This list is by no means exhaustive, there will be others on the market which meet the Joint Research Centre certification but which have not been presented to us for inclusion.
The list of readers is provided purely for information. Defra and RPA do not endorse any of the listed products nor monitor performance of such products. Determining the suitability of the reader for an individuals use is a matter for discussion between the supplier and customer.
